Ready to Battle!

On Wednesday, July 12, 2023 Russell was diagnosed with adrenocortical carcinoma, an extremely rare type of adrenal cancer. So rare, that only one in a million people are diagnosed with this cancer because few are familiar with the symptoms (affecting only 300 people in the US each year). Russell's cancer has been graded as stage 4, as it has spread into his liver and his lungs. Russell is being treated in Houston, Texas at MD Anderson.

Russell and his family feel very blessed with his medical team. They can’t say enough good things about MD Anderson, "they truly are angels on Earth!" - reports his wife Tiffany. Russell started chemotherapy on Wednesday, July 12. After three weeks in Houston - twelve days of which were spent in the hospital, Russell was able to return home to Amarillo on July 26 and reunite with with his sons and extended family.

Unfortunately, on July 27 Russell was admitted to BSA in Amarillo to treat bleeding, infection, and low potassium. He went into AFib so they moved him to the MICU so they could treat his elevated heart rate. Russ continued to be in AFib despite IV medication so on July 29 they shocked his heart to get it back in a normal sinus rhythm so he wouldn't have a stroke. Luckily, it only took one shock and he was back in normal sinus rhythm. On August 1, Russell was released from the hospital and we continue to pray that he can rest at his home and enjoy time with his family before heading back to Houston for his second round of chemo.
Russell's treatment will be aggressive and he is ready for the battle! Thankfully, Russell and his family are positive and faithful. There are so many that have expressed their love and concern so we have generated this blog to help Russell in his journey. Over the next days, weeks, and months ahead he will need to be at countless doctor appointments, hospital stays, and surgeries. As you can imagine the normal costs of everyday living...such as hotels, food, gas, car, etc...the medical costs can be astronomical. MD Anderson is the best option for Russell but unfortunately, 600 miles away from home.
